Traces '22

Material: Marble

Dimensions: Η: 26 x W: 14 x D: 9

This work is dedicated to the Asia Minor Catastrophe,  a significant historical event that left indelible marks on Hellenism. The sculpture is made of marble, a material associated with eternity and memory.

Each part of the work narrates a different aspect of the story:

  • On one side, we see something resembling a sack, symbolizing the hasty escape. This element highlights the panic and despair accompanying a violent expulsion.
  • At the back of the work, deep grooves resemble roots, underscoring the violent separation from the homeland.
  • At the top of the sculpture, the marks of four fingers represent the traces of uprooting. The fifth point where pressure is applied creates a ripple effect, reminiscent of the sea, symbolizing the means of escape.
  • The work “Traces ’22” is a narrative sculpture that, through its symbols and forms, recounts the tragedy and pain of the expulsion.
